Virginia’s Mobile ID (mID) is a voluntary, secure, and digital version of your Virginia-issued driver’s license or ID card that you carry in an app on your smartphone. Due to the nascent state of this technology, it is advisable to continue carrying your physical ID as not all entities may be equipped to verify mID credentials at present. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles highlights the importance of having your physical ID on hand for instances such as traffic stops or emergencies.
The mID offers an official driver’s license or identification card on your mobile device, enabling you to manage the information you disclose. Unlike conventional cards and barcodes, you have the flexibility to restrict data shared with businesses and organizations during transactions.
The introduction of mID aims to enhance convenience, privacy, and control for users. Robust privacy measures are integrated within the software, ensuring that user interactions are shielded from tracking by external sources. No data is transmitted from your device without explicit consent. Moreover, Virginia does not receive notifications about the usage patterns of mID.
From a security standpoint, mID provides businesses with a heightened level of confidence in the authenticity and integrity of identity data. This serves to reduce fraudulent activities such as unauthorized purchases, unlawful driving practices, and criminal impersonation of individuals.
