Due to the nascent state of this technology, it is advisable to continue carrying your physical ID as not all entities may be equipped to verify mID credentials at present. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles highlights the importance of having your physical ID on hand for instances such as traffic stops or emergencies.

The mID offers an official driver’s license or identification card on your mobile device, enabling you to manage the information you disclose. Unlike conventional cards and barcodes, you have the flexibility to restrict data shared with businesses and organizations during transactions.
